Did you know that the word “angel” in Greek means Messengers? In fact, the Bible mentions that heavenly agents are messengers of God and it is the angel Gabriel that tells Mary that a special child is to be born to her. According to legend, God appointed a small group of tiny angels to watch over Mary and Joseph as they travelled to Bethlehem. Then when Jesus was born they were so excited that they flew close to earth and burst into sweet and melodious song to herald his arrival.  It is also said that that a Christmas angel appeared to the shepherds to tell them of Christ’s birth.  This is why angels are an important part of any nativity play.

Angels are believed to be immortal and live in Heaven. They are said to act as go-betweens between God and Humans. When you think of angels you think of them in white dresses, with wings sprouting from their backs and halos over their head. Wings are said to symbolize everything that is innocent, virtuous, pure, peaceful and loving. A halo is a ring of light or aura that surrounds the head of a holy or sacred figure. It is meant to represents a glow of sanctity.

Many people believe in Guardian Angels as beings who are assigned to protect and guide each of us. This belief certainly was common back in ancient Greek times and was a concept in the Old Testament. Guardian Angels are thought to be with you from the moment of your birth and help you throughout your life. Angels are not allowed help you unless you ask them, but sometimes send you a message to say that they are available to help. One of the most popular signs is a single white feather blown into your path and left for you to find.
